I pull the belt tight around my forearm with my teeth. The women laugh on the street below, following my scarlet trail, calling for me like a lost puppy. The stump of my wrist throbs like a broken heart.
I had no idea she’d have a girlfriend tailing her. Much less one with a hatchet.
I’d thought that I could just get on with it.
They spot me on the fire escape and howl like banshees. I panic. Slip. Reach out to grab hold. With the hand that’s just a phantom.
Gravity teaches me my second lesson of the evening.
